PGA Championship live updates, leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler gets to 9-under after arrest, Xander Schauffele back on top (2024)

Things were very chaotic at Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning.

First, a fatal early-morning traffic incident has pushed back start times for the second round of the PGA Championship. Then, top-ranked Scottie Scheffler was handcuffed and arrested after he was stopped trying to drive around the traffic tie-up the incident caused. Scheffler is facing multiple charges, though attorneys told Yahoo Sports that he's not likely to face a felony conviction and an officer was hospitalized in the incident.

Scheffler was released a short time later, and he returned to Valhalla to start his second round as scheduled. He even birdied his opening hole, and seemed to be in good spirits out on the course. The whole situation, he said in a statement before his round, was because of "a big misunderstanding." Scheffler made the turn with his group at 6-under. He posted a 5-under 66, which dropped him to 9-under at the midway point of the tournament.

Xander Schauffele — who tied (his own) major record with a 9-under 62 in Round 1, which was the lowest score in PGA Championship history — will tee off in the afternoon wave. He entered the day with a three-shot lead, though that quickly disappeared after Collin Morikawa made a ridiculous five straight birdies on his back nine to get to briefly 12-under on the day. He posted a 6-under 65, which gave him a two-shot lead when he hit the clubhouse. Schauffele, however, quickly retook the lead by the time he made the turn in his round. He'll enter the weekend at 12-under.

Tiger Woods, however, struggled on Friday. He fell down the leaderboard early after a pair of triple bogeys, and ended up missing the cut.

  • Tiger gets an ovation

It was a foregone conclusion for most of the the second round that Tiger Woods would miss the cut at the PGA. A couple of triples in his first four holes sealed that deal. So when he holed out for birdie on 18, he smiled a big smile and walked off to an encouraging gallery. Plus-seven sends him home.

If there's a positive, it's this: after those doubles, he was 1-under over his final 14 holes.

Next time we see him will likely be in June at Pinehurst.

For a brief moment, Will Zalatoris said there was a group of players who wanted to postpone Friday's round at Valhalla.

"At one point there were a group of guys in the locker room talking about going to the PGA of America about it, but I think it was dead in the water in the locker room. It was bizarre."

  • And now he's given one back ...

Schauffele missed a short putt for par at 11, a rare mistake for him in his first two rounds. The lead is back to just one.

  • Xander not done

Another hole, another birdie for Xander Schauffele. He's got it to 13-under, two strokes clear, after a birdie at 10. He may not shoot 62 today, but he going low again.

  • Schauffele back to the lead

It took him nine holes, but Xander Schauffele has taken the lead back from Collin Morikawa. With a birdie on 7, Schauffele got to 11-under, to tie Morikawa. Another birdie at No. 9 and just like that, the man who shot a 62 on Thursday is to 12-under, 3-under on his round Friday.

  • What about the cutline?

1-under, that's where it's projected right now. Here are some of those in danger of (or definitely) missing the weekend:

(* Denotes still on the course)

    - Jon Rahm (E)

    - Matt Fitzpatrick (E)

    - Jordan Spieth (E)*

    - Dustin Johnson (+2)*

    - Wyndham Clark (+4)

    - Phil Mickelson (+4)

    - Tiger Woods (+6)*

    - Michael Block (+8)*

  • Tiger nearly holes it

It hasn't been a good day for Tiger Woods, who is on his way to missing the cut. But he did have this moment at No. 8:

    WOW!

Tiger Woods nearly ACES the 8th hole! 🐯#PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/RU2DMW3VyJ

    — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 17, 2024

Even with birdies on Nos. 7 and 8, Woods is still 6-over no thanks to a pair of triple bogeys. The cut line is projected to be 1-under, so it's doubtful he'll be playing tomorrow.

  • Brooks Koepka!

The defending champ started his second round with a bogey, then birdied the second and, well, drained a 58-footer for birdie at the third. At 5-under, he has himself in the mix.

  • Scottie Scheffler warmed up in his jail cell

True story. After his round, Scheffler provided some details of his arrest:

    - He stretched in his jail cell, hoping he'd make it to the course in time.

    - He found out starting times had been delayed by watching a TV tuned to ESPN from his cell, then he started doing some math.

    - He never name dropped.

    - Officers offered him a sandwich while in jail.

    - He never considered not playing.

    - He said he was shaking for over an hour.

And he had this to say about his round: "I would say it was pretty good. "I definitely never imagined going to jail and I definitely never imagined going to jail the morning before one of my tee times."
