I cook meals and snacks for my family fairly frequently. Unless we are out and about for some activity, I try to prepare food at home. My two children often help me out around the kitchen. My five-year-old daughter is becoming especially helpful, and my two-year-old son likes to help out as much as he can. Cooking is an important skill to teach all kids. When recently offered the chance to review the Do It Myself Kids Cookbook kit from PBS Kids in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to add a new title to my home library. The spiral-bound book plus measuring cups and spoons currently costs $26.99.

Description

Recommended for children age 4 and older, the Do It Myself Kids Cookbook kit from PBS Kids includes a 128-page spiral-bound paperback cookbook and six nesting measuring cups and spoons. The cookbook for kids features 45 recipes that encourage the youngest chefs to learn how to cook with safe and fun food ideas. The safe and healthy recipes do not require the use of anything sharp or hot in the kitchen. The set is made in the USA.

Evaluation

I absolutely love the fun and education kits from PBS Kids. As a homeschooling mom, I often incorporate cooking and kitchen lessons into my daughter’s life skills curriculum. I will not raise children who grow up to be adults who cannot fend for themselves in the kitchen. I thus love the idea behind the Do It Myself Kids Cookbook. Each recipe in the spiral-bound book includes a photograph, list of tools, list of ingredients, tips or grown-up prep, and step-by-step instructions. For example, the “Apple and Peanut Butter Puzzle” requires a cutting board, tablespoon, butter knife, small plate, large apple, tablespoon of lemon juice, and four to six tablespoons of peanut butter. A grown-up should core and cut the apple and then the little chef spreads on the peanut butter while reassembling the apple.

Now that my daughter is five years old, I have begun giving her more independence in the kitchen and at breakfast especially. She usually rises before me and is ready to eat as soon as she gets up. I used to leave a bowl of cereal out for her when she was a little younger, but now she has learned to make herself a peanut butter sandwich when she wants. The recipes in the Do It Myself Kids Cookbook are easy enough for her to follow with only a little help and preparation from me. The cookbook is the perfect addition to our homeschool life skills curriculum.

I finally love that the Do It Myself Kids Cookbook kit came with a set of measuring cups and spoons. My kids love helping me measure, scoop, and pour just like most kids do. I can use the nesting measuring set to teach my kids about measurement as well as how to cook. I also already own an almost identical nesting set of measuring cups and spoons, which I absolutely love. The set makes a perfect addition to our kitchen, and now my daughter can help me out even more because we are less likely to run out measuring cups and spoons while we cook and bake!

Final Verdict

Cooking is an important skill that all children should learn. Recommended for children age 4 and older, the Do It Myself Kids Cookbook kit from PBS Kids includes a 128-page spiral-bound paperback cookbook with 45 recipes for children and six nesting measuring cups and spoons. Each recipe in the spiral-bound book includes a photograph, list of tools, list of ingredients, tips or grown-up prep, and step-by-step instructions that are easy for the littlest chefs to follow. My daughter is excited to practice her burgeoning cooking skills with the Do It Myself Kids Cookbook, which I highly recommend to all parents of children age 4 and older.
