What is ESG investing also known as?
ESG Investing (also known as “socially responsible investing,” “impact investing,” and “sustainable investing”) refers to investing which prioritizes optimal environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors or outcomes.
ESG investing is sometimes referred to as sustainable investing, responsible investing, impact investing, or socially responsible investing (SRI).
Rational sustainability centers evidence and analysis: Alex argues that ESG investing is often irrational, as is the backlash against ESG; renaming ESG “rational sustainability” will recenter hard-nosed logic in decision-making.
Impact investing is more focused and deliberate in seeking investments with a specific social or environmental outcome. In contrast, ESG investing considers a company's ESG factors and traditional financial metrics. This is one of the main differences between ESG and Impact investing.
When you choose ESG investing, you're putting your money to work in companies that strive to make the world a better place. This type of ethical investing strategy helps people align investment choices with personal values. ESG stands for environment, social and governance.
ESG means using Environmental, Social and Governance factors to assess the sustainability of companies and countries. These three factors are seen as best embodying the three major challenges facing corporations and wider society, now encompassing climate change, human rights and adherence to laws.
- Environmental – this has to do with an organisation's impact on the planet.
- Social – this has to do with the impact an organisation has on people, including staff and customers and the community.
- Governance – this has to do with how an organisation is governed. Is it governed transparently?
ESG is the most emergent of the two, having shot up in popularity over the past few years. Some people would even go so far as to say that ESG is replacing CSR.
Amidst this global trend, BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has taken a bold step by transitioning its investment strategy from ESG investing to a broader approach called transition investing. This move has significant implications not only for BlackRock but for the entire financial industry.
To secure a job as an Associate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Consultant at one of the Big 4 accounting firms (KPMG, EY, PwC, Deloitte), you'll need to follow a strategic approach that includes education, skills development, networking, and a well-prepared application process.
What percent of investors invest in ESG?
89 percent of investors consider ESG issues in some form as part of their investment approach, according to a 2022 study by asset management firm Capital Group.
Investors increasingly believe companies that perform well on ESG are less risky, better positioned for the long term and better prepared for uncertainty. Companies that realign to the stakeholder capitalism agenda may have a competitive advantage over those that try to return to business as usual.
Anti-ESG: These funds invest purely based on anti-ESG factors, building portfolios of companies fund creators believe have been unfairly penalized by ESG ratings. Political: Political funds with an anti-ESG focus usually seek out companies believed to have policies that sync with a more conservative agenda.
The UN makes it official. A 2004 report from the United Nations – titled Who Cares Wins – carried what is widely considered the first mainstream mention of ESG in the modern context. This report leaned in heavily, encouraging all business stakeholders to embrace ESG long-term.

For plans looking for ways to align their investment objectives with sustainability goals, we offer portfolio solutions grounded in robust proprietary ESG research and disciplined investing principles.
So where does the term ESG come from? The first group to coin the phrase ESG was the United Nations Environment Programme Initiative in the Freshfields Report in October 2005.
However, there are also some cons to ESG investing. First, ESG funds may carry higher-than-average expense ratios. This is because ESG investing requires more research and due diligence, which can be costly. Second, ESG investing can be subjective.
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) is a framework used to assess an organization's business practices and performance on various sustainability and ethical issues. It also provides a way to measure business risks and opportunities in those areas.
What are ESG Risks? ESG Risks are those arising from Environmental, Social and Governance factors that a company must address and manage. These risks are a combination of threats and opportunities that can have a significant impact on an organisation's reputation and financial performance.
- Reduce waste.
- Communicate efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
- Increase usage of renewable energy.
- Educate about climate change.
Does human capital come under ESG pillar?
Human capital management has evolved as a significant component of the “S” pillar in the ESG framework, since a business cannot operate without qualified human capital to run it.
While it is true that ESG considerations can help financial institutions mitigate certain risks, such as reputational risk, regulatory risk, and operational risk, ESG is also about identifying and taking advantage of opportunities for sustainable growth.
In December 2022, Florida announced that it was taking $2 billion out of the management of BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager (and biggest lightning rod for ESG criticism). This was the largest such divestment thus far. These attacks have been coordinated.
One of the biggest criticisms of ESG is that it perpetuates what it was partly designed to stop – greenwashing.
It argues that the SEC's mandatory disclosure rules are controversial and therefore ineligible for judicial deference because they impose a political viewpoint. The proposed rules are also controversial because they harm investors as a class in order to confer a benefit upon a subgroup of investors.
