Should I pay someone to do my stocks?
It will also depend on how much money you have to invest. If you have strong financial acumen, and experience investing, then you might be fine investing your own money. If you have less than $50,000 of liquid assets then you may also want to consider going at it on your own as the fees might not be worth it.
If the following applies to you, you may want to consider hiring one: You lack the time or knowledge to manage your investments: If you don't have time to devote to researching investments and managing your portfolio, hiring a financial advisor can be a good option. Perhaps time isn't an issue, but knowledge is.
You can hire a broker, an investment adviser, or a financial planner to help you make investment decisions. You can also get investment advice from most financial institutions that sell investments, including brokerages, banks, mutual fund companies, and insurance companies.
Hiring a financial advisor can seem like an unnecessary expense but they often save you money in the long run. If you choose to hire a financial advisor, make sure all their fees are transparent before you sign. Usually, a financial advisor is recommended when their fee is less than what they can save for you.
Fee type | Typical cost |
---|---|
Assets under management (AUM) | 0.25% to 0.50% annually for a robo-advisor; 1% for a traditional in-person financial advisor. |
Flat annual fee (retainer) | $2,000 to $7,500. |
Hourly fee | $200 to $400. |
Per-plan fee | $1,000 to $3,000. |
Advisor (Management) Fees
The industry typically refers to this as an investment management fee and averages between 1-2% of assets (i.e. A $100,000 investment could cost you between $1,000 - $2,000 annually).
Generally, having between $50,000 and $500,000 of liquid assets to invest can be a good point to start looking at hiring a financial advisor. Some advisors have minimum asset thresholds. This could be a relatively low figure, like $25,000, but it could $500,000, $1 million or even more.
Those who use financial advisors typically get higher returns and more integrated planning, including tax management, retirement planning and estate planning. Self-investors, on the other hand, save on advisor fees and get the self-satisfaction of learning about investing and making their own decisions.
A financial advisor helps people manage their money and map out a plan for the future, including retirement. Whether they focus on financial planning in a broader form or focus on niche topics, financial advisors draw up plans or recommend specific investment products and vehicles to meet the needs of their clients.
If investing 15% of your income sounds like more than your budget can handle, you can start with a set dollar amount and be consistent about it. Investing even a few dollars each month can sometimes be enough to see a return if you're using the right investment strategy.
Is a 1% management fee high?
Many financial advisers charge based on how much money they manage on your behalf, and 1% of your total assets under management is a pretty standard fee.
Most of my research has shown people saying about 1% is normal. Answer: From a regulatory perspective, it's usually prohibited to ever charge more than 2%, so it's common to see fees range from as low as 0.25% all the way up to 2%, says certified financial planner Taylor Jessee at Impact Financial.
While 1.5% is on the higher end for financial advisor services, if that's what it takes to get the returns you want then it's not overpaying, so to speak. Staying around 1% for your fee may be standard but it certainly isn't the high end. You need to decide what you're willing to pay for what you're receiving.
Billable Assets | Fee Schedule |
---|---|
First $1 million | 0.80% |
Next $1 million (more than $1M up to $2M) | 0.75% |
Next $3 million (more than $2M up to $5M) | 0.70% |
Assets over $5 million | 0.30% |
Online listed stock and ETF trades at Schwab are commission-free. Online options trades are $0.65 per contract. Service charges apply for automated phone trades ($5) and broker-assisted trades ($25) for stocks, ETFs, and Options. Futures trades are $2.25 per contract8 for both online and broker-assisted trades.
Source: 2021 Fidelity Investor Insights Study. Furthermore, industry studies estimate that professional financial advice can add between 1.5% and 4% to portfolio returns over the long term, depending on the time period and how returns are calculated.
For portfolios with a $100,000 value, a 1% annual fee can reduce that value by as much as $30,000. “The average investor pays from approximately 1.5% to 2% annually,” says Stuart Boxenbaum, CFP®, investment advisor and president of Statewide Financial Group. “So the math is pretty simple.
At Morgan Stanley, or any big firm, 1% is a fairly common fee---and a fair one, in many cases--provided it covers all transaction costs and is the Advisors' sole compensation on the account [meaning that the client's interest should be the Advisor's only interest.]
The average fee for a financial advisor generally comes in at about 1% of the assets they are managing. Be mindful that you may still pay a higher nominal dollar as there's a higher base the percent fee is applied to.
Experts say it makes sense to hire a financial advisor in the following circ*mstances: You don't have the time or inclination to manage your finances. You experience a major life event, such as a marriage, divorce, loss of a spouse, birth of a child, relocation or change in your employment status.
Do millionaires use financial advisors?
Of high-net-worth individuals, 70 percent work with a financial advisor. You can compare that to just 37 percent in the general population.
Costs: Financial advisors cost money, and not all charge you in the same way. Some charge a percentage of your total portfolio per year. Others charge you an ongoing annual fee, some charge a one-off service fee, while the investment broker pays others via commissions.
Regardless, if you're not feeling fulfilled in your current advisor relationship, remember: You can always leave.
Not only that, but by shirking responsibility for your own investments, you're also losing a lot of money in FEES. The fees you pay to a financial advisor may not seem like a lot, but it is a huge amount of money in the long-term. Even a 2% fee can wipe out a significant amount of your future wealth building.
Though an education in buying and selling stocks can be a lifelong process, the initial startup is a matter of a few easy steps. Do you need a broker? The short answer is no—you don't need a living, advice-giving, fee-charging broker (although you shouldn't rule them out).
