Tennessee defeats Texas A&M to win first baseball national championship (2024)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Tennessee won its first-ever baseball national championship on Monday, defeating Texas A&M

TOP FIRST INNING

Zander Sechrist retired the Aggies in order to open the ballgame.

BOTTOM FIRST INNING

Blake Burke followed Moore’s home run with a single.

A Dylan Dreiling walk put runners at first and second with one out.

The Aggies limited the damage to one run.

TOP SECOND INNING

The Aggies collected their first hit on a leadoff single courtesy of Hayden Schott.

Sechrist retired the next three batters, recording his second strikeout of the night to end the inning.

BOTTOM SECOND INNING

A Cal Stark walk was all Tennessee managed in the second. A popout by Christian Moore ended the inning.

TOP THIRD INNING

With one out, a throwing error by Cal Stark on an infield single allowed Travis Chestnut to reach second.

Chestnut stole third two pitches later.

An infield single put runners at first and second with still just one out.

Sechrist got out of the inning on a 4-3 double play.

BOTTOM THIRD INNING

Blake Burke led off the inning with a double to the centerfield wall.

A Billy Amick groundout allowed Burke to advance to third with one out.

A Kavares Tears single kept the line moving, bringing Dean Curley to the plate with two runners on.

Christian Moore struck out swinging to end a 1-2-3 inning.

With one out, back-to-back singles brought the go ahead run to the plate in the sixth.

Nate Snead relieved Zander Sechrist after 5.1 innings. Sechrist is responsible for both runners, but is in line for the win.

Snead rolled up a groundball for a fielder’s choice, putting runners on the corners with two outs.

Blake Burke snagged a line drive for the final out of the inning.

BOTTOM SIXTH INNING

Texas A&M’s Evan Aschenbeck came on in relief to begin the sixth.

Dean Curley doubled down the rightfield line to put a runner in scoring position.

Curley advanced to third on a Cannon Peebles foul out.

Cal Stark grounded out to first to end the inning.

TOP SEVENTH INNING

With one out, Kaeden Kent singled to bring the tying run to the plate for the Aggies.

Nate Snead walked pinch hitter Ryan Targac to put runners at first and second.

A flyout to right allowed the runner at second to tag up to third, putting runners at the corners with two outs.

Snead got out of the inning without allowing a run, stranding both runners.

BOTTOM SEVENTH INNING

With two outs in the eighth, Billy Amick singled for his first hit of the night.

After a leadoff single, Pigeon Forge native Dylan Loy entered the game.

Nate Snead finished his day after 1.2 shutout innings, striking out one batter.

Dylan Loy retired one batter before being replaced by Kirby Connell.
