  • Royals' Gavin Cross: On injured list with back issue

    Rotowire

Cross was placed on Double-A Northwest Arkansas' 7-day injured list Wednesday due to back tightness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Cross has been excellent with a .297/.381/.453 slash line over 46 contests with Northwest Arkansas this season. The outfield prospect will be sidelined at least a week before he'll be able to return to action.

  • Royals' Kevin Padlo: Signs minors deal with Royals

    Rotowire

Padlo signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Wednesday.

Padlo was let go by the Dodgers in late May after slashing .216/.340/.380 with 29 RBI through 209 plate appearances with their Triple-A affiliate. It didn't take long for him to find a new gig, but the 27-year-old infielder will drop down to Double-A Northwest Arkansas upon joining the Royals organization. He may be promoted to Triple-A Omaha if his bat stays productive in Double-A, but with a career .325 OPS in the majors, a stint with the Royals is unlikely.

  • Royals' Brady Singer: Royals-Guardians postponed

    Rotowire

Singer and the Royals won't play the Guardians on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Cleveland.

The Royals and Guardians will make up the postponed game as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 26 After missing his previous turn through the rotation last Thursday due to an illness, Singer was cleared to start Wednesday, but he looks like he'll have to wait until Thursday's series finale with the Guardians to make his return to the rotation.

  • Royals' Nick Loftin: Retreating to bench Wednesday

    Rotowire

Loftin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.

Loftin had started in six of the previous seven games and looks to have emerged as the Royals' preferred option at second base in the absence of Michael Massey (back), but Loftin will give way to Garrett Hampson at the keystone Wednesday. Since being called up from Triple-A Omaha on May 26, Loftin is hitting .261 with an RBI and a run scored.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Losing work at second base

    Rotowire

Frazier is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.

Frazier appeared set to take over as the Royals' primary second baseman when Michael Massey (back) was placed on the 10-day injured list May 26, but Nick Loftin has seen the majority of the starts at the keystone over the past week. The 32-year-old had been included in the lineup in both of the the Royals' previous two games, but both of his starts came in the corner outfield while Loftin manned second base. Neither Frazier nor Lofton will start Wednesday, however, as Garrett Hampson covers the keystone while MJ Melendez and Hunter Renfroe cover the corner-outfield spots.

  • Royals' Kyle Isbel: Back in action Wednesday

    Rotowire

Isbel (head) will start in center field and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Guardians.

After exiting Sunday's 4-3 win over the Padres when he was kneed in the head in a collision with teammate Bobby Witt, Isbel was withheld from the lineup for Tuesday's 8-5 loss, but he's back in action Wednesday. Garrett Hampson spelled Isbel in center field Tuesday but will move to second base for the second game of the series in Cleveland.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Gets aboard three times in loss

    Rotowire

Garcia went 2-for-4 with a walk, one stolen base and two runs scored in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Guardians.

Garcia is making excellent contact lately with multiple hits in nine of his last 16 games. He's gone hitless just three times in that span. It took a while for the third baseman to get into a rhythm at the plate, but the Royals stuck with him atop the lineup due to his speed. Garcia is slashing .267/.316/.398 with five home runs, 14 steals, 35 RBI, 40 runs scored, 12 doubles and three triples through 60 contests.

  • Royals' Hunter Renfroe: Pops fifth homer

    Rotowire

Renfroe went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Guardians.

Renfroe has quietly started to turn things around, going 13-for-49 (.265) with two homers, five doubles and eight RBI over his last 15 contests. That's a vast improvement over the first quarter-plus of the season, though he's still at an ugly .179/.256/.327 slash line through 172 plate appearances. Renfroe has added five homers, 21 RBI, 21 runs scored, one stolen base and eight doubles over 51 contests. He sat out both games over the weekend with Nelson Velazquez and Adam Frazier each getting a turn in right field, but Renfroe remains the Royals' primary right fielder.

  • Royals' Sam Long: Takes first loss

    Rotowire

Long (0-1) allowed two unearned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning to take the loss Tuesday versus the Guardians.

Long put two runners on base before giving way to Angel Zerpa in the seventh inning. A Bobby Witt error would allow three runs to score, including the two on Long's line that sent him to the loss. He still hasn't given up an earned run over 5.1 innings this season, and he's generally pitched well with a 5:1 K:BB in a low-leverage role since he was brought up to the majors May 20. Long has previous experience as a starter, but none of his six big-league appearances this year have exceeded one inning. He went longer than an inning in eight of his 15 outings for Triple-A Omaha prior to his call-up, so he could still be called on to provide length out of the bullpen.

  • Royals' Bobby Witt: Goes yard twice in loss

    Rotowire

Witt went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Guardians.

The 23-year-old superstar took Triston McKenzie deep in the third and fourth innings to help stake the Royals to an early 5-0 lead, but Seth Lugo and the bullpen couldn't make it hold up. Witt has hit safely in 16 of the last 17 games, a stretch in which he's slashing .378/.400/.716 with six homers, two steals, 15 runs and 23 RBI.

  • Royals' Seth Lugo: Rough night in Cleveland

    Rotowire

Lugo came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Guardians, coughing up five runs on six hits and a walk over six-plus innings. He struck out five.

Kansas City staked the veteran right-hander to a 5-0 lead, but homers by Josh Naylor in the bottom of the fourth inning and Tyler Freeman in the seventh fueled a Cleveland comeback. Lugo tossed 64 of 98 pitches for strikes before exiting, as he lasted at least six innings for the seventh time in his last eight trips to the mound, a stretch in which he sports a 2.19 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 57:12 K:BB through 53.1 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Mariners.

  • Royals' Kyle Isbel: Sitting out Tuesday

    Rotowire

Isbel (head/neck) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Cleveland.

Isbel departed Sunday's game against the Padres after taking a knee to the head during a collision with teammate Bobby Witt. He avoided a concussion, but Isbel isn't feeling well enough to play even after Monday's team off day. Garrett Hampson will cover center field Tuesday.

  • Royals' MJ Melendez: Taking seat Tuesday

    Rotowire

Melendez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Guardians.

Melendez will get the day off Tuesday after making five consecutive starts in left for the Royals. Instead, Adam Frazier will fill left field and bat seventh.
