Some interesting developments at this hotel.

The entire second floor is being converted to self-contained apartments. Most will be studios but there will be some one- (and maybe two-) bedders. The rationale is that the plaza - the area at the back of the hotel, closest to the river - is finally being redeveloped. Tenants will include an IGA store (a supermarket chain), at least two F&B outlets (not associated with the hotel) and a gym. The apartments won't be ready before September at the earliest. Years ago, the plaza was a bustling spot with lots of shops. For some time now, it's been desolate and quite depressing.

It will be interesting to see what this does to rates. I seem to recall that the hotel was slated to drop to category one in March 2020 but was saved by the pandemic when category changes were abandoned. I can't see an off-peak award night in the entire calendar (although the overwhelming majority are priced at the standard 8K rate). I have also noticed that the lowest member rate recently has been $194, a noticeable way from the circa $175 that wasn't uncommon.

This photo is taken from the regency club towards the plaza.

Permanently or temporarily? Recent TripAdvisor and Google reviews of remodeled rooms look decent. I have a stay in a few weeks so guess I will find out.

That hasn't been made clear. Presumably it will still be a hotel, but under what brand seems to be anyone's guess.

I don't believe any of the remodelled rooms are yet available. Rooms have perhaps had a soft refresh but the remodel whereby rooms on level two were becoming short-stay-style apartments is woefully behind schedule and ongoing.

I have noticed rates have more than doubled in the last week.

You certainly got the dates right as any booking after Aug are at the guaranteed rate. Man.. I was hoping to get a few night there in 2025.

I called them, the guy claims there's an update next week. That they were in talks w Hyatt about their future. Whatever that means.

My travel agent provided me with this statement she was able to obtain from Hyatt:

Hyatt Regency Perth and the hotel’s owner, Tuan Sing Holdings Limited, are currently in consultation with key stakeholders regarding the future of the hotel. We will share more information as soon as it becomes available and expect to do so early in the week of June 24, 2024.

I know nothing about how all this works but it strikes me as some kind of dispute about costs between the owner and Hyatt. I find it strange that the owners would go to the expense of converting the second floor rooms into short-stay-style apartments without a clear view to the future.

If it was to leave the chain, I can only see Accor being interested, perhaps branding it a Grand Mercure.

This has been a Hyatt since 1988, so 36 years now. You'd hope the owner has a long and close relationship with Hyatt. In any case, I hope it stays a Hyatt as there's a distinct lack of Hyatt properties in Australia.

There's apparently been quite a bit of news coverage in Perth today. Even the state's premier weighed in.

Hyatt Regency Perth in 1988 joined Hyatt’s global portfolio and has welcomed former Prime Minister John Howard, Canadian pop star Justin Bieber and US rapper Kanye West in its time.

Premier Roger Cook said the Hyatt had served West Australians greatly, and reminisced about the hotel’s opening after the 1983 America’s Cup victory.

“Everyone was excited when we saw the architects’ renders and it really represented everything that Western Australia was going to be in that post America’s Cup world,” Mr Cook said.

“We’ve all got fond memories of the Hyatt and obviously will be sad to see it go but we know that there is more tourism products being brought on stream day in day out as our tourism industry continues to grow.”

Mr Cook denied the closure was tied to falling demand for hotel accommodation, saying the city was experiencing rising rates of visitation and tourist spending.

“Tuan Sing plans to share further information on a new hospitality offering for the site in the coming months, but can confirm the site will remain a hospitality-focused venue offering both short and long stay accommodation to guests,” the spokesman said.

According the 7 news, it will continue to operate as a hotel under a new management. My guess is Hyatt wants them to do an upgrade/refurb but the owners don't want to which resulted in them terminating the management contract. It's old and tired, and not fit (imo) to be a hyatt regency. It'll probably be rebranded as a Mercure or Novotel based on the term 'repositioning'. The difference between this property and the Hyatt regency in Sydney and Brisbane is night and day.

Sorry to lose from the Hyatt portfolio though to be fair it's unlikely I'll return to Perth anytime soon.

So what are the best alternatives now? Surely not the horrid Parmelia Hilton.

Westin, Ritz-Carlton, Pan Pacific, there's a few options...
